As a homeschooling family. We are always up for something new to investigate. This bug came into our home. I thought it was a grasshopper. My daughter quickly got her Bug Book and verified that it was a fork-tailed bush katydid Scudderia furcata. We can hear them at night. We find this bug fascinating. It sparked a whole new view on these noisy critters. We are thankful it was our little guest.

My extension has them listed as a pest because they eat fruit and leaves of fruit trees.
I have seen around 5 in my orchard, but they are not numerous enough to do damage.
I like them, they are pretty and bathe when I water the plants.
Edited to say I don't mind sharing some of my crop with the bugs; they only bite tiny little holes in them that heal as a type of scar. Not bad at all unless you have to sell fruit.
