Potatoes are an edible tuber of the nightshade family. They're native to the Andes region of South America, but other, similar edible tubers are found throughout South, Central and North America. It is from here that they eventually spread to Europe and other parts of the world, and today, potatoes are a staple food crop known and enjoyed worldwide. There are over 1,000 types of potatoes thanks to hybridization.
