DNA barcoding is unable to differentiate among the Herring gull, Thayer’s gull , Iceland gull, Lesser black-backed gull, Western gull, Glaucous-winged gull, and Glaucous gull. Therefore, the justification for splitting the Herring Gull into two species would appear to be rather weak.

Unfortunatly these birds adapt well to human habitation. It is now illeagle (locally) to feed these birds out of the water. (I.E. on the beach) They make themselves at home in any garbage pile, spreading disease to other shore birds, and becoming nusance beggers at every restaurant with outdoor seating.
