Pla...Read Morent at Fairchild Tropical Garden sale in Miami. it now lives in zone 10-b and is a 10 year old small tree, about 8-10 ft. It Blooms reliably, starting in Nov. and is a beautiful sight every winter. In the spring when the blooms fade, I cut mine back by about a third to keep it compact. I have successfully started plants from cuttings, taken in the spring.

All I knew was tha my ant had it in her backyard and I fell in love with this shrub. Well, it was here where i found the name and a very brief description of the shrub. I live in Puerto Rico and I am planning to start growing this shrub for now on. I want to thank for Dave's Garden for having a wonderful site with a lot of helpful information and products. Blooming is triggered by shortening day length and artificial light to close to the plant will prevent blooming. It is semi deciduous going dormat after the bloom period. It produces numerous seed capsules that explode upon ripening around March casting the seeds out. This plant will take hard pruning to help keep a full rounded shape and to maintain the desired height.
Whitefly has been a problem with this plant but only in 2 years out of 18 that I have grown it.

As seed drops new leaves sprout in green. This large shrub blooms best and longest when the days are short and no other lights exist(ex. street lighting). Great show at Christmas.
