Characteristically, the species has a long spur to the flower (hence the name), petals somewhat separated, and leaves and stipules much less elongate than in V. tricolor and other pansy-relatives. These traits can still be seen in hybrids where the cornuta influence is strong. What you can't tell from any photo, is that V. cornuta, and some of its hybrids, are very nicely scented - whereas most pansies are not.
