After a few seasons however - they can become very impressive as they tend to be heavy on flower and less on foliage. They also tend to sleep during the winter and compared to more evergreen varieties - they look naked once all their leaves have dropped. (This might not be the case in warmer areas - Greece can get cold in the winter!!) However, once spring comes back they are the first to flower. Mine grow alongside jasmine and white solanum over a vast pergola and when all three species are in flower it looks spectacular - like a huge cloud of white flowers. Avoid too much watering once established - I find that they tend to look after themselves provided that there is enough rain during the winter. Also - if planting with other kinds of climbers - make sure they have similar water needs. No wisteria - as they will compete on a root level and the wisteria will always win stunting the growth of other plants. These plants look beautiful when mixed - I prefer them that way then just on their own.
