They like sun and well drained soil, mine are on a hillside, with wood chip mulch covering crummy clay soil. I have seen them thrive when planted among cactus and succulents. They do NOT like to be pampered or overwatered-- surprising for such a showy plant! Find them a happy spot and leave them alone-- do NOT prune them or fertilize them. In one year they grew from 15 inches to 3 feet tall, and are covered with buds this second year-- hope the deer aren't hungry!
