The order Piciformes consists of 409 species of birds that inhabit forests and woodlands. Every bird in the order Piciformes has two toes pointing forward and two pointing backward. They generally feed on insects and nest in hollow cavities inside trees. Woodpeckers make up about half of all Piciformes species. Toucans are also included in this Order.
