The bird order called Apodiformes includes a large and diverse set of 450 bird species worldwide. Hummingbirds and all species of swifts belong to this order. The name 'Apodiforme' in Greek means 'footless', and birds in this order tend to have tiny feet suitable only for perching with limited ability to walk on the ground. Their feet are covered with skin rather than scales. Other characteristics of the Apodiformes order include long wings with exceptionally strong humorous bones, the better for hovering like hummingbirds do.
