The Asian Paper Wasp invaded New Zealand in 1979, and 20 years later was widespread in the upper North Island. They eat native invertebrates, nectar and honeydew, competing with insect eating birds for their prey e.g. our Tui.
Wasps are active from early spring to late summer. As they only have males and females, the one female wasp that becomes dominant, becomes the queen and is looked after by the others.
The males and females all help with gathering food, building nests and producing and looking after the young.
In flight their long, dangly legs identify them as Asian Paper Wasps.
