Netelia producta - known as Orange Caterpillar Parasite Wasp, Red Jacket Wasp and Red Soldier Wasp - are found in Australia, Java and widespread throughout New Zealand. They do not live in colonies. Being parasitic, they lay their eggs in the larvae of the Noctuid Moth (Armyworm caterpillars). Only the females have stingers, and they do sting! I was stung on the arm when I was a little girl. It was a really painful sting, and I still have the roundish, blotchy mark.
