This is a large damselfly, being 36mm in length and is common throughout Great Britain, where most other species are more usually seen in southern areas.
The female varies greatly in colour, with different forms. They are one of the earliest to appear in spring, and can be seen from late April in warm seasons until August.
They prefer freshwater habitats, and rarely will be found by fast moving streams.
Their food is small insects caught in flight, but can fall prey to larger dragonflies, birds or other predators.
