This is a solitary bee which can be seen flying mostly from April to early June. It is a pollinator of early flowering fruit trees and shrubs.
The female will make a nest in loose soil, often in lawns, making a small volcano-like mound with soil excavated for the nest. They nest alone, but there may be more than one nest in the same area. Nesting lasts for only 2-3 weeks, after which the mound will disappear and care should be taken not to confuse this with ant mounds.
