I've never been stung by the paper wasp, but I keep a healthy distance, just the same.....it is supposed to be a friend of the garden.

I have a nest of paper wasp that have moved in to the entrance way of my greenhouse. Every morning I open up the greenhouse and one of them greets me. Does the little antenna wiggle thing then flies back into the nest. So, I say good morning. & good nite every nite when I close up the greenhouse. My face has been inches away from their nest & they just look at me. I've taken several pictures of them up close and they don't care if I'm there or not. When I have the fan on in the greenhouse they tend to land on it when it needs to be turned down... When I'm out in the yard & the dreaded yellow flies start attacking and bitting ... next thing I know, there are little paper wasps flying around me & the yellow flies disappear. I really do enjoy these wasps being around.

Definitely beneficial for gardeners; I allow them to nest right outside my door. Have (slowly) placed my hand within inches of nest without incidents.

They are likely good for the garden, but the pain and danger to children out weigh the benefits.
