Unearthed two of these on an early April morning. They were sluggish but beautiful. How can something live in the wet clay soil and not have any stick to them?
The DGrs in the Texas Gardening forum were sharp enough to ID this critter for me. Good or Bad? Depends on which side of the caterpillar fence one is on...

Unlike a great number of insects, the Fiery Searcher has a life span of about 3 years, overwintering in debris and in the ground.
Their food is caterpillars, and although it does not descriminate between good cats and bad...I still call it a good bug.
Common in crop fields, where it's food is plentiful throughout the US and Canada.
