Found this bug on our patio in Ottawa, Canada in June, 2011. Was very sluggish. I'd never seen one before.

Saw it once last year 2007 trapped between the screen door. Finally released it. Uncommon to rare in the Twin Cities. Very obvious - look like the head and arms of a mantis fused onto the abdomen and wings of a fly. Small in size, about 1/2 inches or less. The book, Audubon Society Field Guide To North American Insects & Spiders second printing said the common name is Brown Mantidfly.
