The Lone Star Tick is also the main vector of Bobcat Fever. Cytauxzoon felis, aka Bobcat Fever, is spread to bobcats (the natural host) and domestic cats by ticks. It is usually fatal to domestic cats.

In Suffolk County, NY the larval stage of these ticks are responsible for what appears to be a chigger rash. (The larvae will typically invade sock lines and waistbands just as chiggers would.) Apparently chiggers are not native to the area. This information was supplied by the Suffolk County Vector Control Office. As an additional note, these larval stage ticks are newly hatched and do not transmit disease.
