Collembola
Springtails
Springtails are members of the Collembola class of hexapods. These bugs are less than 1/4 of an inch long and have six or fewer body segments. Fossils of springtails have been found from as far back as 400 million years ago in Scotland and today springtails are found worldwide. They mainly live in moist areas, near decaying leaves and soil or indoors in damp basements and bathrooms. Springtails feed on tubers in soil which can damage crops but they may also carry spores of fungi that are beneficial to agriculture.
