Thysanoptera
Thrips
Thrips are very small, slender insects with fringed wings. There are about6000 species that feed on a wide variety of plants. Thrips are very active and leap or fly quickly when disturbed. They can be very destructive to garden vegetables and can spread diseases such as Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus and Necrotic Spot Virus. Thrips do not fly well, but the wind can carry them great distances. Females can reproduce with or without a mate and lay their eggs in plant tissues. To feed they pierce and suck the sap or draw the juice out of plants. Thrips can be very hard to find because they hide deeply inside the crevices of plants.
