Polydesmida
Polydesmid Millipedes
Polydesmid millipedes are the largest order of flat bodied millipedes and vary in length from œ inch up to 5 inches. They are found worldwide in all areas except Antarctica and contain about 3,500 different species. They primarily live in tropical forests but can also be found in temperate areas. Most species are brightly colored to warn predators that they have toxic secretions. They also produce hydrogen cyanide. Polydesmid millipedes can be red, yellow, orange and black with 18 to 22 body rings. They are blind and commonly live in leaf litter, soil, under rocks and tree bark, with a lifespan of one to two years.
