Scolopendromorph centipedes are tropical insects with 21 to 23 body segments, the same number of paired legs, long antennae and bodies up to 12 inches long. Some are blind but certain species have simple eyes with poor vision. They are native to South America and the Caribbean. Scolopendromorph Centipedes have sharp claws used for defense and to catch and kill their prey with venom. They move very quickly and are aggressive when catching their food - including lizards, snakes, frogs, mice, birds and bats. Their venom is toxic to humans and it can cause severe swelling, chills, fever and weakness. Allergic reactions to the venom can be fatal.
