I only see them in the early spring (Feb/Mar), must be on their migration route. I first knew them as buffalo-heads, and still call them that.

We usually see this bird mixed in a raft of redheads, canvas backs, mallards, swans, geese and loons. With several fast moving rivers that do not freeze over in the winter, we are a popular year round playground for waterfowl.
