Anseriformes is an order of birds encompassing 125 species. The best known Anseriformes species are waterfowl such as ducks, geese and swans. Modern-day Anseriformes descend from species alive during the Cretaceous period. Like their ancestors, many modern Anseriformes have a suction-like tongue that draws water into the beak and pushes it out through the sides and rear, allowing the bird to collect small food particles from the water efficiently. Others have bills adapted to eat vegetation by plucking or shredding, or bills adapted to catch fish.
