The fruiting bodies resemble a Devil’s head which splits open when mature ..releasing two seeds. The flowerheads, comprising of seven tubular flowers, provide a valuable source of nectar for honeyeaters.

The name Mountain Devil comes from the shape of the woody seed capsules, which can be seen as a devil's face with two sharp horns on his head. Two winged seeds are protected within each capsule and are easily extracted.
I have had a shrub growing in my garden for some 10 years and it flowers beautifully each year, having reached a height of about 1.5 metres. It did not set any seed at first, but now seems to set plenty of seed each year.
