I've had Winter Sun growing in an indented breezeway space facing NW for a dozen years now. It gets open shade, then some western sunlight from overhead and around a holly tree from about noon to three, when the mountains cut off the sun.
We had to hack off 2/3rd's of it to repaint/rescreen the breezeway, but it bushed out on the one limb we left.
It blooms at a different time than the regular mahonia near it. (I think it blooms first-I forget-but there is a bloom sequence.)
Great evergreen to plant in the shade-especially where you can use it's spiny leaves to discourage intruders from screens!
