Found in the Greater Antilles, western Central America and northern South America. Breeds from central Mexico to Colombia and northwestern Venezuela, and also on the Greater Antilles

It is a vagrant to the United States and has been introduced to Hawaii. Three North American records: One at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, Texas on January 22-24, 1990; one near Homestead, Florida on July 7-12, 1990; and one at the Dry Tortugas, Florida on April 20-25, 1994.
