Another one of my favorites. In the winter, their coloring is striking against snow. They are just as busy and happy as they can be.

i love these little birds. In my yard, they always seem to beat the eastern bluebirds to the birdhouses i have up in my back yard, and i have witnesses both male and female bluebirds try to attack these chickedees to try to steal their nest to take the birdhouse for themselves even though wasnt theirs to begin with. Because of this i have grown a sour spot for the bluebird and now love this little grey black and white carolina chickedee just as much. They are very attentive to their young in their nests and have very many noisy baby birds to feed which keeps the mother quite busy and active. They are the noisyest chicks of any small yard birds i've ever heard, which is not good as it can attract predators. good thing they are so small as a large hawk can try, put cannot usually fit through... read more

I see plenty of these birds...usually in pairs...at my feeders and picking through seedheads of spent flowers. The ones that frequent my back yard are not scared of me...because I walk around them while they're feeding. They seems to be perfectly comfortable eating suet while I'm standing just a few feet away, now that they know my routine won't interfere with theirs (and that I keep them well fed). I'm trying to get them comfortable enough to eat from my hand...and suspect they'll do so before long. One landed on my shoulder recently while I was filling a feeder...so here's hoping. They're FAST birds and very agile...so maybe they know they can get away if threatened. But they're a pleasure to have around. Keep feeding your birds during winter! It's surprising how many stick aroun... read more

Chickadees readily come to my bird feeders. I also have a couple who nest in one of my bluebird houses. They have just finished building their nest this week. Not sure how many broodes they produce each year, but they start nesting in this area in mid February.
