I've been seeing this wasp for several years and was unable to find an ID on it. I was told by someone it was one of the Scoliid wasps, but noone could ID the species because apparently it is a neotropical species not really known in the U.S. Finally....quite some time after submitting an ID request to the BugGuide site, someone has decided on Campsomeris ephippeum, after another BugGuide ID request on it was also recently received from the same county I live in. Still no common name, but finally an ID! I'm happy!
