In the North, these butterflies like wet meadows and in the South, dry hillsides are prefered. They range from southern Canada to Georgia and west to Kansas.
The caterpillars feed on Turtlehead, Honeysuckle and some other plants. To overwinter, they band together and spin webs around the host plant. Come spring, they leave their commune in search of food.
In my area, they pupate(pearl-gray chrysalis) on the concrete berm of the main road. They fly from May to July. There is only one(1) generation a year.
