This native ladybug is a predator of scale insects, most notably, the dreaded Euonymus scale and Hemlock scale insects. If this insect or larvae are found on a plant infested with scale, it is best to avoid using insecticides, and let nature take its course. Both adult and larvae consume large amounts of scale, leaving the dried scale "husks" behind.
