Just met one of these in my garden last week in Tempe AZ. Quite lovely and not at all threatening, once I figured out that it had an ovipositor, not a huge stinger!

I found one of these wasps in my living room today. It looks creapy but it didn't hurt me or my children. I was surprised so see something so exotic looking in my house....he was a welcomed guest. :)

These are non stinging wasps.
They do appear scary looking, because of their exceptionally long ovipositor, at the end of their bodys.
At first glance, one might assume it is a humongous 'stinger', but that's not so.
The long ovipositor is to help them lay their eggs down inside rotting wood.
