This dragonfly is one of the largest dragonflies in the US. It makes the green darner (Anax junius) look like a youngster. During midday, the males fly around shallow ponds waiting for females to come by to mate. In the morning, they haunt fields and woods edges scooping up all manner of insects - often medium sized flies, flying ants and termites, moths, and even other odonates.
As these do no damage to plants, but do eat large numbers of plant eaters, they are beneficial to have around - even if they do eat a few smaller dragonflies and damselflies.
