These are all around my herb garden this month and seem to enjoy the cool shaded area and waterings. I keep a water dish out for the dogs and what ever else may pass by. I think these (and the other dragonflies that hang out here) help keep the mosquito population in check.

The female was not willing to let me approach her for a long time, finally she allowed me to get within inches for a few quick photos. A male that frequents the same area is much more approachable.

This is a fairly common dragonfly, and is present in most of North America. The mature males have a white waxy layer on their abdomen. They are found on low plants and near the waters edge.
