Odd how names of things change with your geographical location. Up here we commonly call those things leaf-hoppers and 'katydid' is another name for cicada.
Guess it's a darn good thing that everything has a latin name that doesn't change with your region.

I know that they're pests, and they do a number on my buddleia and nicotiana every spring, but I just find them so pretty that I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of foliage for now...

Green monster eats leaves off of my citrus, and anything else it lands on. Even my strawberry plants. Easy to see, since they are so big, so I pinch them between two leaves and throw them in the trash. Funny, I'm going to a gardening class and teacher said it was a grasshopper. No way. It is definately a green katydid.
