They feed on flower pollen and/or nectar, but also other insects.

This is most likely the male. Larvae feed on a variety of soft bodied creatures such as snails and slugs.

On 13th July 2008, mating. The female tends to walk around while mating, her abdomen is swollen with eggs. Larvae live near the base of tall grass, feeding on invertebrates, snails & slugs.
