Have seen this for decades in Central Kansas. I just took a picture of one on my car at Cheney Lake Campground, 20 miles west of Wichita. (July 21st, 2021)
I\'m 61 now, but remember being a bit freaked out seeing one when I was 5 or 6 at one of the local lakes.
We have far more cottonwoods than we like here. (allergies)
I\'m a sort of amateur entomologist since I was a kid.
