The Mexican Milkweed is an excellent tall xeriscape plant. It blooms continually until the first hard freeze. The blooms attract butterflies. It self-seeds. (San Antonio, Tx.)

I started these Asclepias curassavica plants from seed. The butterflies just flock to them. In St. Louis they bloom in early July and carry their blooms until frost. Do not let the pods break open in your garden unless you want thousands of plants in your garden.

A monarch butterfly caterpillar along with several other types of insects munching on a Mexican milkweed. I can not irradicate the other insects because of the monarch caterpillars. The milkweed will bounce back after being eaten. Shown in April. (San Antonio, Tx.)

We planted a couple and now they are all over the place. Many butterflies lay eggs on them and the larvae eat all the leaves, but they always come back.

The devouring has begun. I did not get a pic of it when they (monarch catapillers) were done but not a leaf was left and the longest branch was two feet from the ground.
