Taken on 9th July 2008, Lincoln UK. A male, the same as M. domestica but with a darker orange abdomen, females eyes in M. autumnalis are slightly larger so males possibly are too. Thanks to Theo.

Back view, on Osteospermum, they are 4.5-7.8mm long, males smaller than females. They lay eggs in cow manure, possibly horses too as there are horses near, they suck juices from their eyes and nose.

On 10th July 2008. I see one every year on a rose shrub near the Osteospermum, in a high position, they don't go into dull buildings. I thought this was M. domestica, advised by an expert otherwise!

Same male fly on a rose leaf, notice the very large eyes. Sheltering in buidings only to overwinter, emerging in March to April and again from June-July to mid October.
